Book review ~ The Covered Deep

Title: The Covered Deep
Publisher: Worthy Publishing
Publishing Date: October 14, 2014

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

My interest in this book is: Trying out a new author. Loved the idea of the book: An incurably romantic bookworm from Appalachia wins a contest and travels to England and the Holy Land in search of the perfect romantic hero.

Type of Book: 1877, US, London, Holy Land

Ideas / message / plot: "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and might things, which thou knowest not." ~ Jeremiah 33:3

Favorite characters, quotes / lines: Paul is in my top 5 favorite Male Leads.

PLUS...Brandy has just the right lines! Here's an example: "The question in his eyes was primal, as fragile as a child. Bianca's heart caught at the sight of him--the boy within the man--that part that he so rarely showed."

When I finished this book I felt: *sigh*. This is why I love Christian Historical Romance.

Overall:Brandy! Excellent debut. You have all the necessary tools to write captivating, realistic fiction that grabs the heart and the soul. By far one of the most romantic Lead characters I've read in a while. I minored in Linguistics in college so to have a Christian Lead who speaks all those languages, knows history and culture...swoon!!! I'm sure you can guess my favorite scene. (Here's a hint: Breakfast.)

5 Stars. Bookshelf worthy.

Other books with similar theme: Did you ever watch the movie, "The Game" with Michael Douglas? Did you get caught up in the thrill of who was in charge and what was going on? Get ready and hold on as Ms. Vallance takes you on a ride that I had yet to experience in Christian Historical Fictions.

    1. Lis, whether you win it here or not this is definitely a winning read.

My next vacation is to these places. I agree...totally in love with the histories here. I also enjoyed the book, "A Walk With Jane Austen" by Lisa Smith; just a different read that really made me want to visit.

I would definitely love visit some Asian countries-South Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore. Because I am very curious and these cultures seems so different from my European one, so I see this as very enriching experience! I love zo understand the reasons behind the behaviour, so I would love to explore it personally.

  4. I would want to win a trip to Okinawa, the small Japanese island. I'm extremely in love with sharks, and I am pretty sure the sight of those stunning whale sharks would make me pass out. I literally cried watching this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7deClndzQw) for the first 4-5 times I watched it, just because of their sheer grace and elegance. Also I've never been anywhere in Asia before so it would be cool to see the different cultures, and I've always wanted to go to Japan anyways. Maybe while I'd be there I'd also pop by one of the bigger cities like Tokyo and shop around there ^u^

    1. Thanks for featuring the book, Joleen! The plot inspiration came from a lot of places. When I began writing The Covered Deep, reality TV shows were pretty popular. I started wondering what would happen if a reality TV setup happened in the Victorian time period--in other words, what would happen if characters were brought together to be tested? My imagination soared after that. Add in lots of romance and I thought it was the perfect mix. Hope you all do too! :-)
