Book Review ~ The Messenger

Author: Siri Mitchell
Publisher: Bethany House
Date of Publication: March 1, 2012

Type of Book: Historical fiction, American Revolutionary War

I received this bookfor free through www.netgalley.com from the publisher for an honest review.

Ideas expressed/message/plot: Told in 1st person narrative, this tale takes us through two characters' experiences in British occupied Philadelphia towards the end of the Revolutionary war. When Hannah and Jeremiah's worlds twist together, they learn a whole lot more about each other than they originally thought.

Favorite Characters, quotes/lines: I really enjoyed getting in the heads of both Lead characters. They were unique and very real. I love the tension that is built in the reader's head when we hear what one character assumes of the other simply based on personal experience; something that the 1st person narrative is perfect for in this book. It is subtle and perfectly written.

When I finished this book I felt: like I had just watched one of those movies where the victory was right there, you know it's there in the next frame but the screen goes black and the credit music rolls. It's a good feeling because you know it's a good ending but it wasn't the storybook wrap up, kiss-the-girl ending. The "last scene" that you know is there left to your imagination. I liked it. I think I may have even loved it. There are few books that carry you through a journey like this as Siri Mitchell does and I think this book is a beautiful piece of art.

Overall: I truly enjoyed this story. It was the first Siri Mitchell book I have read and I look forward to reading more. In all honesty, this book took me a little longer to read & I'm not sure if it's because it was in 1st person or because the telling was of the kind that I couldn't breeze quickly through it. Mitchell slowed me down and made me embrace this world Hannah and Jeremiah Jones lived in.

Definitely bookshelf worthy. I give it 4.8 stars.  Check out her newest book hereUnrivaled which released in March of this year.
