Book Review ~ Love Unexpected by Jody Hedlund

Book: Love Unexpected (Beacons of Hope #1)
Author: Jody Hedlund
Publisher: Bethany House
Publishing Date: December 2, 2014

My interest in this book: I have loved every single Jody Hedlund book I have read. So far, my favorite has been Rebellious Heart, but all of the others tumble over one another to vie for next favorite.

Type of book: Presque Isle, Michigan 1859.

Ideas/message/plot: A sweet, sweet story about love and forgiveness. Hope.

Favorite characters, quotes/lines: I love Patrick and his sensitivity. I love Emma and her longing for home and being settled somewhere; I think every woman longs for the same. I love Ryan and his protective heart--great supporting character.

Emma is very real. Her problems aren't extraordinary or excessive. Jody makes us want to root for Emma with the simplest of situations. Check out this example about cooking:
"She'd never learned how, had never needed to learn--not when she'd lived above one tavern or another over the years. 'We're running low,' he said. 'I'll make  a trip to Fremont tomorrow. Put together a list of what you need.' What would she need? Her mind scrambled to remember some of the things her mam cooked before the famine had started. But her memories consisted only of a constantly gnawing stomach, the frantic pangs of hunger, and the willingness to eat anything, no matter what it was."

Overview: Jody reminds us of where our satisfaction and belonging should be rooted; that God is your home. "No matter where you've wandered, no matter what you've faced, He is there as steady and constant as a lighthouse to bring you safely into His harbor where you can find rest."
Don't miss this heartfelt story as only Jody can tell it. It will touch your soul and refresh your love for the Almighty God who longs for you to be at home with him.

Bookshelf worthy! A full 5 stars.
