Book Review ~ Devotions

I have been reading through a couple of devotionals this last month and I bounce back and forth between the two because they both offer something so uniquely different but oh-so-rich. Both are by fiction authors that I enjoy reading and fully recommend! Let's take a look:

TitleThe Busy Mom's devotional
Author: Lisa T. Bergren
Publisher: Waterbrook
Publishing Date: 2007

Why I like it: Bergren is an incredible author. (Right now I'm reading through her Grand Tour series) She adds her flare of storytelling into these quick devotionals that really do only take 10 minutes or less (depending on how much time you put into it). She seamlessly weaves scripture, story and thought provoking questions to make each reading memorable for the busy day ahead.

Lisa breaks up the devotional into seasons; Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall which means it makes a great Christmas present! (Haha!) Ok, ok, you can start reading whenever. Check out the Title's link to Amazon to read a sample of this awesome book.

Title: Take Flight!
Author: Robin Jones Gunn & Cindy Hannan
Publisher: Multnomah
Publishing Date: 2006

Why I like it: Robin Jones Gunn is one of my all time favorite authors. Her Glenbrooke Series is one of my go-to series when I'm in the mood for a sweet romance that's God-centered. These devotions wont take you much longer than 10 minutes either and they are also broken up into 4 sections. Robin's gift of story telling grasps your emotions for memorable moments that stick with you during the day to help you focus on God's word. After each story is a brief 2 pages from Cindy (it's a small book, so 2 pages really isn't much) that helps bring Robin's story around with scripture to tie into the story just told.

This book is titled "A Sisterchicks Devotional" because Gunn has a book series called "Sisterchicks," though you don't have to have read the books to get something from this devotional. There are just quotes throughout from the books. :)

One thing I wish this book had: Scripture included instead of me going to look it up. Yes, actually getting into my Bible to read and gain context is super important but sometimes I just have a breath of time in my day and I need to soak up as much as I can with as little expenditure as possible.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out, friend! I have another out too this year--UPSIDE-DOWN PRAYERS FOR PARENTS. :-)

  2. Oh fun! Can you tell us how this newer differs from this older one? I truly love the way your storytelling creates an environment to meet with God!

I'm about to post a review for Glittering Promises.....OH, I can't wait! I hadn't read the first two so I'm powering through them before beginning and MAN I am LOVING them! AH! I want everyone to have a copy of this series to read! :)
