Behind the Scenes of Captured By Love

Today I'm so honored to be a part of the Blog Tour for the amazing Jody Hedlund. Her newest book is Captured by Love; one that, I must say--once again--I couldn't put down.

Behind the Scenes of Captured By Love

Have you ever played Trivial Pursuit? It's an old game that was around when I was growing up (I'm probably dating myself, so I might as well come right out and tell you that I'm 29 + a few. And "few" is open to wide, very wide, interpretation!)

I really hated playing Trivial Pursuit because quite frankly my brain isn't built to remember tiny details about things. I'm really more of a big picture kinda person. (And at 29 + plus a few, I've only gotten worse at remembering the tiny details!)

My big brother, on the other hand, could remember every minute detail about every little thing ever made or created. He has an amazing memory. So whenever we'd play Trivial Pursuit, the rest of my family would have partners (usually multiple!), and he would form his own little team consisting of himself. And then, you guessed it, he would still beat us all by a mile.

Even though I may not be the world's greatest trivia woman, I have to admit, I enjoy learning weird or interesting facts that I can weave into my books. I figure if something fascinates me, it likely will fascinate my readers too.

So here are a few fun trivia questions from Captured by Love. Each one of the questions has two "challenging" answers to choose from. Keep track of your answers, compare them to the correct answers at the bottom of this post, and then tell us all in the comment section how many you got right! (Maybe you will earn the new title of Trivia Master that currently belongs to my brother!)

Trivia Question #1: Mackinac Island is a popular tourist attraction in northern Michigan. What is the one thing that is currently NOT allowed on the island:
A. Automobiles
B. Horse-drawn carriages

Trivia Question #2: Fort Mackinac has three structures that belonged to the original fort that was built in 1780: the stone ramparts along the front of the fort, the South Sally Port (front entrance), and the . . .
A. Tea Room Restaurant
B. Officers' Stone Quarters

Trivia Question #3: The name Michilimackinac , the place of the "Great Turtle," was given to the island for its shape. When was the name finally shortened to Mackinac?
A. When a tourist choked to death trying to say the name
B. By the 1820's

Trivia Question #4: Besides a meal of dried peas or corn and fat salt port, what was distributed to voyageurs like Pierre every night after a long day of paddling?
A. Bibles
B. Rum

Trivia Question #5: If you were to walk around the island today, what one natural formation mentioned in the book would you still be able to see?
A. The Tooth Fairy's Fortress
B. Arch Rock

Answer to Trivia Question #1: A (Carriagemen officially began providing tours of the Island in 1869. The carriagemen association was eventually successful in getting the Island to ban the automobile and to this day there are no motorized vehicles allowed on Mackinac roads.)

Answer to Trivia Question #2: B (The Officers' Stone Quarter is a part of the original fort built over 225 years ago. Because it was made of stone, it was one of the safest places to be on the island during an attack.)

Answer to Trivia Question #3: B (Although I'm sure plenty of people have choked over the name Michilimackinac, I'm pretty sure no one has died. Yet! I debated using the name in Captured by Love since it's such a mouthful, but I decided to keep it historically accurate. For those few who care, it's pronounced, Mish-ill-i-mack-i-naw.)

Answer to Trivia Question #4: A (Rum flowed freely among the voyageurs. After a long day of canoeing, a tot of rum was the most anticipated part of the evening. The voyageurs were wild, free spirited men who were often reckless. Because of all the danger they faced, their life span average was only 35 years.)

Answer to Trivia Question #5: B (Arch Rock is a fascinating example of some Mackinac Island's unique rock formations. During the time of Captured by Love, anyone could climb out onto the rock and sit there (and I had my characters do that!). But of course, now Arch Rock is blocked off and can only be viewed from a walkway.)

How did you do? How many answers did you guess correctly? Are you good at trivia or do you stink at it like me?

    1. Heidi, a road trip to that part of the country sounds like so much fun! I just went to Italy and after reading about parts of it in a fiction I had read, it was so great to imagine the characters there.

  2. I got the trivia questions right. I always loved Trivial Pursuit! I bought it to add to our collection of games after we were married. However, my hubby refused to play! Lol he won't play a game unless it us one he usually wins, and he said he was awful at it.

    1. Yeah, I can relate. Haha. I like playing word games but my wonderful hubby likes the Risk/Monopoly, make you strategize kind of games. That's what friends are for, right? ;-)

  16. All correct! Thankfully you write a kinder multiple choice quiz than those I remember taking in school. None of that "D) None of the Above" nonsense. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
