I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and am under no obligation to post a review.

My interest in this book: My husband and son are huge--I mean play it, talk it, watch it "huge"--fans of baseball. My 10 year old son can list you a ton of baseball facts and stats but when it comes to reciting a bible verse? That's a little more complicated to get him excited about. Until now.

Type of book: Devotional/Christian Life

Main ideas / Message: Each page starts with a scripture quote and is followed by a player's definition of why that scripture is important to him. Each page can be read in less than 2 minutes. The following two pages are devoted to some of the player's stats and an interesting fact; like "Matz is the only pitcher and the 26th player in the last century to collect at least four RBIs in his major league debut"; "The average annual value of Kershaw's contract, $30.7 million, is the largest ever for a baseball player."

Favorite moments: To be honest, I didn't even have to read any of the internal content before falling in love with this book. From the cover design to the page set ups to the back cover copy: "Baseball Faith will inspire you in your faith journey as 52 MLB players--past and present--share their stories and how they are chasing the success that only comes from being God's man and following His plan. These men are committed to living their lives with eternity in mind. Empowered by God, they are looking beyond the competition to a larger goal: following God's game plan for their lives as team players, husband, fathers, sons and then using their influence to point others toward Him." And these are not just "devotions." These are real men, successful men, who are showing my son the Way.

Overall: I LOVE this book! I am so glad Barbour/Shiloh Run published Rob Maddi's collection. It's a quick read that will entice even the least avid reader to take a peek; the stats are interesting; it's writing is easy to read for my 10 year old and still interesting for my husband. This book is very relational and I feel that's how lives are changed. Not by teaching, not by dictating, but by relationship. It's why Jesus taught by storytelling. He made the information relatable to the hearers. Rob has done exactly that and I couldn't be more excited to have this book in our home. THIS is the type of man I want my son to become; from the players to the author, all are examples of what you can do with your love of God and baseball. I really can't stop gushing about how pleased I am with this book! Well done Barbour and Rob Maaddi.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07788005806876558529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505670339771872200.post-61010926675377121712016-11-29T11:44:00.001-08:002016-11-29T11:44:17.673-08:00The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill ~ by Julie Klassen

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">Favorite characters, quotes / lines: Each character in this story is woven into the location player by player. I love it all! It's like an onion--you have your core, and then layer upon layer is added, be it a character or his/her story being revealed. Depth upon depth, Julie does a masterful job of creating a living, breathing town of Ivy Hill.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">

This is the book you'v been waiting for. This is a book to not only ignite the dreams in those who are searching or hungry for something more, bur it's a call out the mighty men of God. Chase The Lion, is a Dream-Pursuer's fuel.

Just as Eldridge's book "Wild at Heart" talks about needing something to chase, this is a book to awaken the passion to pursue the call on your life. Reading this creates a hunger to set chase to something BIG!

The thought provoking stories within this book stir hope and inspire you to dream, to keep dreaming, to not let go of your dream. This book belongs on your bookshelf because it's one that you'll go back to time and time again. It wont go out of date. It's content is biblical, it's real-life, it's genuine. Mark Batterson's writing style is fresh, like he's sitting in your living room having a conversation about dreaming your dream with you. I can't tell you how many quotes I posted to FaceBook in even just the first chapters. Truth is truth and there's no avoiding it. We live our lives through story and that's how Batterson relates his message here; through story.

Overall: This really is a book that will encourage your own faith journey and pull on your soul. Jody has a masterful way of relating history with His-story, and yours. She has a God-given talent to tell story--the kind that echoes of eternity and history, of faith and power and love and redemption. I read her books and my soul longs to be in worship to the One True King. You can't help but fall more in love with God after reading the stories she relates.

In this series, she reveals true emotions about being young and in love and includes an invaluable discussion guide at the back of her books. I strongly recommend that this book series—if not this book alone—be read as a small group, using the questions in the back. You will be able to easily discuss topics like: “What are some of the characteristics that drew Juliana and Collin to each other?…What made them a good fit for each other?” “…Why do you think it’s important for couples to spend time really getting to see the other person in their daily life (rather than always prettied-up on dates)?” “…Why is modesty so important for both men and women? And what does modesty mean to you?” I’m not often a fan of the discussion questions contained in novels—they seem like afterthoughts. Not so here! These questions bring up topics that might otherwise feel awkward in a discussion between mom and daughter if brought up on their own.

5+ stars & bookshelf worthy

I will be reading this series with the girls of our church and my daughter!

To celebrate Jody's second book in the Uncertain Choice series, let's do an Amazon giveaway for one of her books. When I finished this book I felt: Happy for everyone. When I finished this book I felt: Satisfied. This is a solid collection of stories that is perfect for the busy woman who just wants to sit and unwind with a decent story. All the authors do a good job of developing their characters and bringing the reader along.

I really enjoyed Nancy J. Farrier's The Richest Knight. It left room for me to want to read what happens next. Isn't that the point of a novella? To entice the reader? Well done Ms. Farrier!

Darlene Mindrup's novella Shelter from the Storm, started off rough for me--descriptions in the beginning felt a little forced--but once we get rolling, her characters are very well developed and you can tell she has created solid backstory for each character without feeling the need to tell you all about it. Perfect!

Loved Lynn A. Coleman's story. Olympic Hopes. It's honest & clear; she's blunt and to the point and her story resonates like a bell in a choir. She does a good job describing feelings, especially for YA who have never experienced love before and need a good example of what to do with the emotions and feelings of attraction and love. You can talk about love but this story helps the reader feel it.

Overall: These are stories that won't take weeks to read. It's nice to have a group of stories that you can just pick up and unwind with, knowing you don't have to think a lot about anything--like watching a Hallmark movie.

Stories range from 3.4-3.8 starts

Why I chose this book: I have enjoyed Melissa's previous books in this series. I fell head over heals with the first book and loved the novella (see below).

Type of book: Mid-West America, 1885

Message/plot: Don't let heart-break and mistakes hold you back from the future God has for you.

Favorite character, quote/line: "The world continues to revolve, Kate. Even when you're stuck in grief or pain or anger or sin--it's how it is. Bad things happen every day. If everyone quit to mourn every tragedy, society would fall apart."

When I finished this book: Content. :)

Overall: Melissa's books are filled with character tension as well as a good, solid plot. I know that when I pick up one of her books, I'll be led on a journey that will have me experiencing what the characters are experiencing. I highly recommend reading this series as an end-of-summer series.

Why I chose this book: My first encounter with Erica was through The Golden State Brides collection by Barbour Books.

Type of book: Texas, 1888

Message/plot: Allowing oneself to be open to others and vulnerable isn't a bad thing; you may get hurt but the things you gain make it worth the risk.

Favorite characters, quotes / lines: "Of course she did. She was ten pounds of determination in a five-pound sack."

When I finished this book: This was cute; simple.

Overall: This story has everything a good novel needs. I think it a little too predictable and would have liked to see a little more tension within the characters themselves. By going deeper, the author could be a little more vulnerable, leading to showing us more than just telling us. Overall though, it's a pretty good story.

Favorite moments: Honestly, I bought this series for Julie's story. I love the Heart of San Fransisco series and this is Blake's story. The other stories were bonuses and it was a great introduction to some authors that I hadn't read before.

When I finished the book: Julie always brings a story that touches your heart and draws you in to God's unending, unconditional love. She is an incredible writer and won't disappoint. I was totally drawn to Patience; "Forgive me for babbling, but some things like music are truly magical, capturing my heart." Amen to that one!

Overall: Julie's Grace Like Rain was my favorite. I enjoyed Meeting in the Middle by Pam Hillman; it was a cute story that flowed well and didn't have any gaps. The other stories didn't quite pull me in, but everyone is different and one of them might become one of your new favorite authors, who knows?! I say give it a try. Really, for $2.99, you can't go wrong, and if you have a Kindle, it's a free read with Kindle Unlimited.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07788005806876558529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505670339771872200.post-83331040814423332372015-06-29T13:52:00.000-07:002015-06-29T13:52:27.577-07:00The Reckoning by MaryLu Tyndall

Author: MaryLu Tyndall
Publisher: Ransom Press
Publishing Date: June 19, 2015

Why I chose this book: I love MaryLu's Pirate series. No one ~ I mean NO one ~ writes Pirates like MaryLu.

Type of book: 1694 Caribbean and Pirates, also Modern day San Diego. ~ Yes, this book involves time travel, a new thing for MaryLu...and it works! I'm not a time-travel kind of reader but in this book, the tension it adds to the story line is pure perfection.

Message / plot: Overcoming fear & worry; God loves you.

Favorite characters quotes / lines: I love the pairing of Nick and our lead, Rowen! Nick should get a Best Supporting Actor award. ;-)

When I finished this book I felt: Very satisfied. This book is written in 4 parts and I thought I had an idea how it was going to end but by part 4, Mrs. Tyndall had me guessing until the end. I come away from her books feeling full; there is always a good message woven throughout her stories and they are presented in such a way that is so natural it's like talking to a friend.

Overall: MaryLu has an incredible way of empowering her readers with truth. Flat out, she's not afraid to tackle spiritual matters. The Bible says we fight against principalities and powers--spirits we cannot see--but are very real. I love that MaryLu doesn't shy away from these topics. Reading through part 3 of this story left me feeling empowered and encouraged to walk in the strength, authority and power that the two missionaries walk in. Thank you, MaryLu! Well done, indeed.
Why I picked this book: As I'm sure you're aware, if you've followed my blog for any amount of time, that I love certain authors and will be on my game to let you know of their latest releases. Jody Hedlund is one of these authors that I know won't disappoint.

Message / Plot: God knows exactly what you need, when you need it; no matter our inadequacies, God has a plan for each of us~as we are; overcoming hopelessness

Favorite character, quote / line: "Sometimes she thought when God had made her, he hadn't stamped hard enough. The imprint He'd made on her was faded, thin, and inconsequential next to Tessa's vibrant and curvy beauty."

When I finished this book: "Together." That line sums it up. Together with God. Together with the people He puts in our lives. Together we are made whole. I love the way Jody brings a message to life in such a beautiful, poetic way.

Why I chose this book: Karen Witemeyer is one of my go-to authors that never fails to give a great message through solid writing and storytelling.

Message/plot: What do you do when life doesn't go the way you planned? How do you trust when no one has proven trust-worthy in your life?

Favorite characters, quotes/lines:

* Ok, let's be honest: we all love that perfect hero. Well, look no further than this story. Stone Hammond is THE ideal hero. *sigh* And Charlotte? I adored watching her on her adventure. What a woman.

* "No one has the right to take another's gift. Not out of greed, or jealousy, or even self-pity."

* Karen gives one of the best example I've yet seen of what "The joy of the Lord is your strength" really means.

When I finished this book I felt: Such a perfect, beautiful ending. LOVE!

What another wonderfully told story by Mrs. Witemeyer. She truly has a passion for people and their stories which translates into her books in a way that transports the reader and gently teaches lessons we all need to either learn or be reminded of. I adore, and am so very thankful for, her heart and passion. May God water the seeds that you sow through your stories, Karen, for they truly are gifts that will bear fruit.

Overall: Mrs. Witemeyer has such a natural way of describing characters and building tension; nothing ever feels forced. She is a master of showing, not telling which makes you feel a part of the book instead of someone is just telling you a tale. Karen will intrigue you with questions that the characters have in order to build tension and uses naturally occurring plot conflicts to grab and keep you. There were many times I meant to read to the end of the chapter only to HAVE to keep reading into the next.

Excellent; 5 star read. Pick it up for a light, fun, adventuresome summer read.

Publisher: David C Cook
Publishing Date: June 1, 1015

Type of book: Contemporary Inspirational Romance

Why I was interested in this book: I hadn't read Varina Denman before and the back cover copy completely grabbed my spirit. I love small town stories and romance, I love compassion and when people realize that they are more than what they've believed/seen themselves to be. I was completely hooked by the first page (the dedication): "For those who try too hard," followed by the scripture Titus 3:5 ~ "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy."

Favorite characters, quotes, lines: 1st line: "My world shattered last winter. A hairline crack formed, and my life perched on the edge of an abyss, set to topple at the slightest breeze. But instead of a breeze, I got a whirlwind." SOLD! Seriously, from the dedication to the scripture to the 1st line; I haven't seen a better beginning that all at once whispered to my soul and heart--ever. Well done Ms. Denman!

And, how can a reader not instantly love Coach and Miss Blaylock?!

Overall: There are some books that you read and you're ready to move on to the next book. Then, like Justified, there are some stories told that require you to take a day or two off as you continue to bask in the story and the community of the people you've just spent time with. Those are my favorite stories. They captivate and impact. They connect. They resonate.

I give this story a full 5 stars. Definitely bookshelf worthy! I have yet to read her debut book Jaded but this book stands incredibly well on its own. There is reference to something that happened at church involving Fawn's dad but it's not enough to distract the reader from the story nor does it tell too much that you feel like you don't need to read the story.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07788005806876558529noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3505670339771872200.post-10364652617749076072015-05-18T15:49:00.002-07:002015-05-18T15:54:18.840-07:00London Tides by Carla Laureano

Message / Plot / idea: A hurting soul who is in search of what she needs; balancing God given passions with reality.

Favorite Character, quotes/lines: "Frankly, the idea I wouldn't want you is an insult to my intelligence."
"he wasn't sure what bothered him more: that he couldn't bring himself to ask or that he might actually care about the answer"
"Only someone who had endured her own share of tragedy could see past the surface of the story to the hurting souls beneath."

Overall: A lot of times I do my best reflective/creative thinking when I'm driving. I guess it's the monotony of it that lets my mind roam free. As I drove the other day, I kept running this scene through my head trying to remember what movie it came from. Then it hit me: Carla's book! Yes, scenes from this book are so well written and connect so realistically to the reader that they will replay in your mind as if you'd watched it on the screen. The characters are very realistic in this contemporary romance and the content relates to them as they grow in Christian values and understanding of God's love for each of them, no matter where they come from/what their past is. This is a beautiful story that adults will fall in love with.

Thank you, once again, Carla for a fantastic read that swept me away to London and beyond. As I read I kept wondering: I thought she lived in the US; is she from London? This story so completely takes you there.

If you want a book that takes you away, into the heart and lives of some very passionate, talented, heartfelt people--or if you've ever wanted to go to London--pick this book up. I think you'll enjoy it.

Type of Book: Inspirational Historical Fiction, U.S. South post-Civil War (1869)

Message / idea: We see the main character, Maggie, break through the "I'm not good enough" lie through a wonderful, beautiful journey.

Favorite Characters, quotes / lines: It seems most of my favorite lines involve Kizzy:

"The child was a newborn kitten grasping the reins of a locomotive."

"seeing Kizzy stretch her arms out wide" (I know it's not a "sales" line, you'd have to read it to understand the moment, but this scene brought tears to my eyes.)

When I finished this book I felt: *sigh* Tamera has such a way of making you feel the story. Lines like: "The dagger in his conscience twisted a half turn even as self-preservation swiftly clotted the wound." And, "His body exhausted, his mind raced. He turned onto his side away from her to face the wall, and at least an hour passed before sleep finally claimed him. But sometime later, when darkness had robbed even the faintest light from the room, he awakened to feel a gentle shudder beside him. Her silent sobs. He lay awake for the rest of the night." What a way to not only tell the story but to make you feel for, and with, the characters. Lines like this make me love the characters even more.

Overall: 5 solid stars. I loved the first impressions juxtapose each other; one of my favorite parts! I adore Tamera's storytelling ability. She draws you in to a historical culture not your own and allows you a breath of a moment to live in their shoes. Magnificent. I also can't wait for the story to continue for Belle Meade. (note, this is an adult-historical read since the content involves a loving married couple you are exposed to the romance of a marriage. Which I appreciate!) ;-)

Other books to read by this author: I suggest Ms. Alexander's Belle Meade series and her Belmont Mansion series. To Whisper Her Name (Belle Meade Plantation book 1), is one of my all time favorite historical fiction reads.

Favorite Characters / quotes / lines: I know this book is about Falcon, but I fell in love with Eamon and loved his story woven throughout Falcon's own tale of self-discovery.

"Special Forces. They didn't just toe the line of danger--they crossed it and demanded it respond." How can these guys not be our heroes?

When I finished this book: Once again, a whirlwind of action, adventure and adrenaline. Ronie hits you right off the bat and doesn't let up until the end.

Overall:

If it's been a while since you've read book #2: Hawk, I recommend you re-read it and then immediately pick this one up; it leaves off seconds after Hawk ends. This is a fun, intense story that has everything a great story needs. The cast is amazing and rich, the plot is heavy.

Book: From the Start
Author: Melissa Tagg
Publisher: Bethany House
Publication Date: March 31, 2015

I received a copy of this book from www.Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Type of Book: Inspirational Contemporary Fiction

Message/Idea of the book: What do you do when things don't go according to plan? The end of something isn't always the end. "I don't particularly like seeing you hurt, but a life completely free from heartbreak? I can't want that for you. It'd mean your heart was hard. Steeled. Unmovable."

Favorite Characters/quotes/lines: Colton is great as is Kate. Norah is awesome and a perfect role. My Kindle is chock full of quotes. Here are some that made me smile:

"He followed her from the room. Logan's sister. Strictly business."

"I like the simplicity of the objective, but the intricacy of getting there."

"You paid him?"

"He cocked one eyebrow, waiting, his amusement so obvious it was practically a third person in the little exchange."

When I finished this book: Man! Any person who is remotely interested in the craft of writing should study Tagg's works. She is masterful at storytelling; at making you feel the story; of drawing you in; getting to know the characters.

Overall: I love the pace of this story! I sincerely feel like these characters have been through a lot and have really had time to get to know each other--nothing is rushed; totally natural; fantastic! Also, I love authors who don't hide behind a mask. Tagg's faith comes shining through her work (just visit her blog to catch an inside peek at who she is). It's an honor to read her works and it always encourages my faith.
